Some medications, when used regularly/frequently, can lead to a decrease in certain vitamins, minerals, and components, thereby impairing body functions that are important for athlete health and performance.
I have shared below some commonly used medications and some of their adverse effects:
-Birth control pills: Deficiency in B12, B6, Mg, Zinc, CoQ10, Vitamin E, selenium
-NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, diclofenac, indomethacin, etc.): Hyponatremia, risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, and disruption of intestinal flora
-Common cold medications: Dehydration
-PPIs and antacids: Magnesium and B12 deficiency, decreased absorption of calcium and vitamin D
-Antibiotics: Disruption of intestinal flora
-Anti-asthma medications: B6 deficiency
-Anti-diabetics: B12 deficiency, increased lactic acid
-Statins: CoQ10 deficiency
-Antidepressants: Hyponatremia
Before starting any treatment or throughout your regular treatment, it is important to inform your doctor or pharmacist about the type, intensity, and frequency of your exercise. They will provide you with the necessary monitoring, guidance, and support to assess and prevent the potential adverse effects of medications on your performance.
